Is Healthcare Really Better Today?

Updated: Oct 5, 2023

Is healthcare really better today? In the United States especially, health care has changed dramatically in the last 40 years. Once upon a time your family doctor would see you everywhere. In the office, emergency room and even come to your home. In fact I had a discussion with a classmate nurse this weekend at my high school reunion about how back in the day, Family Physicians in particular would get up early in the morning, round in the hospital, see their own patients in two separate practices, go home and have dinner and then back to the the hospital before the day was over.

Physicians personally controlled how they ran their practices and to a very large extent how hospital care was administered as well. Your your physician visits were likely far simpler, and far less expensive. Your family doc was always there for you. And knew you better than many people in your life.

Fast forward 40 years and now in a typically corporate run "family" practice, you can't even get in the front door as a new patient in these practices without a litany of questions some of which are deeply personal. And I question what effect these really have on health care but rather serve instead as politically correct data gathering machines. The real kicker is more and more you are less likely to even see a physician. You are told you'll be seeing a "Provider". Unless you specifically ask you won't even know how well trained this provider person is. After extensive undergraduate college, did they do years of medical school and all that entails to even get to residency training, three to five years in residency, fellowship or more, or did they recently graduate from a "program" that doesn't even require significant or maybe any patient contact for that matter. Here's my point. You have a right to know who's caring for you and your family. Too often though you're not even being told unless you ask very specifically. Don't be misled by the white coats and scrubs and now a days sometimes even the term "doctor". Be careful out there. As a patient, if you'd prefer the "old fashioned" patient experiences, consider our private practice. And if you are a physician or PT, think about what you can do inside your own private practice to create the warm personal environment and care our patients really deserve! ~ We Are Here for You
