Cardiovascular disease or CVD, as we discussed last time is the number one cause of death in men. This encompasses a range of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, impacting the cardiovascular system. It's a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Some of the more prominent conditions are Coronary Artery Disease, Cerebrovascular Disease, Peripheral Artery Disease, Aortic Disease, Heart Failure, Hypertension, Rheumatic Heart Disease, and Congenital Heart Disease. Each one of these diseases presents a risk to the structure of your heart in some form.
Cardiovascular disease has various modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors that can heavily effect your chances of developing a heart condition. Some of the nonmodifiable factors include age, some genetic and birth related issues, other illnesses and diseases causing cardiovascular damage, APOE genetic mutations, gender (men worldwide having a higher risk), and of course family history.
Some of the modifiable life factors include:
Smoking and vaping (anything!)
Poor diet (high in saturated fats, trans fats, high intake of animal products, and salt)
Physical inactivity
Obesity
High blood pressure
High Total and LDL cholesterol, Low HDL
Diabetes
Excessive alcohol consumption
Stress
There are related lifestyle choices that can be changed or treated to lower your risk of developing a cardiovascular condition. The best way to prevent one of the many conditions is to keep a healthy, plant based diet with regular exercise while maintaining your weight. It is so to avoid smoking, minimizing or eliminating alcohol consumption and managing stress effectively.
Cardiovascular disease has various symptoms that change from condition to condition. The most common symptoms include: chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, pain, numbness, weakness, or coldness in legs or arms, pain in the neck, jaw, throat, upper abdomen, or back, fatigue, dizziness or lightheadedness, palpitations or irregular heartbeats. Any of these can represent a medical emergency so be smart! Do not delay emergency medical care! Prompt treatments may include appropriate medications, procedures and sometimes surgeries. .
In summary, cardiovascular disease encompasses a variety of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, with significant impacts on our lives and health. Early detection, lifestyle changes, and appropriate medical care are crucial for managing and preventing these diseases. Regular check-ups and awareness of risk factors helps mitigate the risks associated with CVD.
